How to prepare for moving house

Looking for a reliable removalist is one thing, but before you even get to this stage how do you start preparing to move house?

Have you ever looked around, in the kitchen cupboards, the wardrobe and even the garage or garden shed, and thought ‘where do I start?’

Like many residents of the Sydney suburb of Waterloo, you may have lived in the same house for many years, collecting a lot of ‘stuff’ in that time. Clothes, accessories, an abundance of kitchen appliances, containers, salad bowls and garden apparatus including those spades that you never use…

Moving house is the perfect time for a major clean out. A new home is a new start and it’s hard to start afresh with all that clutter.

Here are some simple tips to follow to help you with your clean out before you move:

  • Do one room at a time – it makes the whole process less overwhelming. Start a few weeks or a month in advance and aim to do one room at least per week. If you need, break it down into an hour per night or whatever suits you best. That way cleaning out the entire house and garage seems more ‘doable’.
  • When it comes to clothes, shoes and accessories follow this mantra ‘if in doubt throw it out’. Or, if you haven’t worn it in 12 months it can go. For example, if you didn’t wear those shorts last summer at all, are you really going to wear them this summer? Don’t keep things ‘just in case’.
  • For the kitchen: Get rid of duplicates, obscure accessories that you’ve never used (that melon baller was good in theory), things still in boxes and things that always seem to be ‘in the way’. If you have 10 containers but only use one or two per week, half can go.
  • Garage/garden shed: Do you have a shed full of spades, rakes, weeders and other accessories that you never actually use? Have you accumulated a life time of boogie boards and outgrown wetsuits? Keep only one of each of the basics but get rid of duplicates. Or, similar to your clothes, if you haven’t used it in a year – time to go!
  • Finally, what to do with all the ‘stuff’ you have cleaned out? You have a few options. Time permitting, you could have a garage sale and make some money to help pay for the removalist. Or, if garage sales aren’t your thing, bag up the clothes and any home wares and other useful items and donate them to a local charity such as St. Laurence or other charity Op shops. ‘One man’s trash is another man’s treasure’.

Now that you’ve cleaned out you can pack up!
